History of Gaya

Mythology says that Gaya got its name from the mighty Gayasura who attacked Heaven to avenge the slaying of his father Tripuarasur, the holy demon.

The holy place finds a place in the famous epic Ramayana where Lord Rama along with his wife Sita and brother Lakhsman visited the place to offer Pinda to their deceased father , King Dashrath.

In the famous epic Mahabharata, Gaya was called Gayapuri For about 2300-2400 years,  Gaya is known for being a prominent part of the Magadha region.

Sisugana, the founder of Sisugana dynasty exercised its reign over Gaya around 600 BC.

Bimbisara, who ruled around 519 BC  acquainted the world with Gaya.

Gaya was blessed by Mahavir and Gautam Buddha during the reign of Bimbisara.

The Nanda dynasty also ruled over the holy place for a shorter period of time.

With Emperor Ashoka (272 BC – 232 BC), the place under the control of the Mauryan rule. 

The construction of first temple at Bodh Gaya by Ashoka, the Great actually marked the begining of the influx of Buddhist pilgrims.

During 4th and 5th centuryA.D. the  arrival of Guptas especially the famous Gupta King Samudragupta, brought Gaya to the front. 

During 12th century, the invasion of  Muhammad Bakhtiyar Khilji marked the intrusion of  Muhammaddan rulers.

The 16th century witnessed the reign of Pathan Chief Sher Shah In 1764, the famous Battle of Buxar went under the control of Britishers.

Till 1864,  Gaya was an integral part of the district of Ramgarh and Bihar.

In 1865, it was accorded the status of independent district.

In 1947, Gaya tasted the fruit of freedom.
